Marketplace plans are commonly organized in four metal categories. The category is a starting point, not a complete plan comparison.
Marketplace categories are Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum
Marketplace plans are grouped by metal level. The category generally reflects how costs are shared between the plan and enrolled people on average; it does not tell you every benefit, network, or out-of-pocket rule for a particular plan.
There is no universal “three levels of coverage” rule that accurately replaces the official plan categories and documents.
A metal level does not replace the plan details
Two plans in the same metal level can still differ in providers, prescription coverage, deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximums.
Compare the actual plan documents and total yearly cost for the care you expect to use.
Financial help can change the comparison
For eligible applicants, financial help and cost-sharing reductions can affect the value of certain Marketplace options. The official application determines eligibility and current results.
Do not assume one metal level is right for every household without comparing current options.
